Events!

Fire Alarm Mini Project!

A Mini-project will also be held on Wednesday(today) May 26, in Boelter 4760, at 6PM. We will be teaching students about a fire alarm circuit. Mini-projects are a great way to get into electrical engineering for some, and expand on previous knowledge for others. All parts will be provided, so bring your friends (even non-engineers would be welcome) This will be the last mini project of the year, so please come out to show your support. We put these on for you guys.

Inter-IEEE Bonfire!

There will be a bonfire at the end of week 9, Saturday, May 29, at Huntington Beach. The bonfire will also have students from UCSD and UCI's respective IEEE groups. This would be an excellent opportunity to mix and mingle with students from outside universities. If you would like a ride to the event, please meet at Ackerman Terminal at 3:45 PM, and will most likely last until 9-10 PM. Come and bring friends, and have a nice relaxing time before the end of the year! Please fill out this form if you do intend to attend: https://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&pli=1&formkey=dENNVWZwNEVmZl9hYWVKRWJBeXBKMHc6MQ

Wanted: Mentors!

What is a Mentor?

  • Who: 2-5 incoming freshmen/transfers, probably undeclared engineering majors who need help deciding
  • What: Be a resource. If they have a question, they email you. You might meet them a few times. Most importantly, herd them as a group to see their faculty advisor. (All people in your group get the same advisor)
  • When: Fall Quarter for sure. Rest of the year too, probably, TBA.
There will be mentor-mentee only events - another great opportunity to get involved with IEEE! Note: this is a joint effort between IEEE, HKN, and the Engineering Department.

UPCOMING EVENTS!

EAGLE Workshop

There will be a PCB Prototyping Tutorial with EAGLE software this Thursday (May 20) at 6PM, in Engineering IV 57-124. We will be learning how to create parts using EAGLE software, so please bring your laptops to this event. These events are very informative and worth your time, so hope to see you there! This is the 3rd part out of a 3 part tutorial, and will be all for this year on EAGLE. All students are still welcome, please come by even if you haven't for the past week. Learning how to effectively use EAGLE is extremely valuable.

A message from Jacob Portukalian on this tutorial:

PCB prototyping is a skill that is highly valued in industry, especially for small companies and R&D departments. In this 3-part tutorial, we will take you through layout of a PCB board in EAGLE including creating custom components, circuit trace layout, and post-layout processing. When you are done you will have a circuit and layout that you could either etch yourself or order it from a PCB fabrication house. The skills learned will apply, not only to PCB layout in EAGLE, but also to many other CAD programs, including CADENCE. Also covered will be standard SMT component sizes and footprints.

Bring: laptop with EAGLE installed. Sample circuit diagrams will be provided, or you can use your own.

Requirements: It helps to have a basic knowledge of circuit components (e.g. resistor), but everyone is welcome.

We'll be expecting to see you there.

Professor of the Year Survey!

Please take a moment of your time to fill out this anonymous survey on who your professor of the year is! Go HERE.

Fire Alarm Mini Project!

A Mini-project will also be held on Wednesday May 26, in Boelter 4760. We will be teaching students about a basic fire alarm circuit. Subject: Career Opportunity at Union Bank

Hi Bill,

Thank you so much for inviting me and Marnelli to the alumni-student meeting with SWE last Thursday. It was a very nice experience speaking with the students knowing that somehow we can make a difference as alumni.

There are still open spots at Union Bank for internships starting this summer and throughout the school year for student engineers (as I have spoken with my brother-in-law this past weekend). Please have students with a junior or senior class standing send their resumes to collegerecruitment@unionbank.com. If they have any questions regarding the position, please email Halisi.Byrd@unionbank.com.

Thanks again and I look forward to many opportunities with the students in the future.
