IEEE Essentials: Tilt Sensor
Date:
Tuesday, May 21st
Location:
Boelter Hall 4760
Time:
6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Description:
Come to the second IEEE Essentials of this year and make your very own tilt-sensor, complete with LED’s to indicate the direction of the title. The PCB board is a circular disk with the accelerometer at the center and a ring of LED’s attached to the circumference of the circuit board.  As one tilts the board, the LED’s corresponding to the lowest point will light up. Please see this link for a video demonstration.
 
Due to the limited amount of kits, please come early as kits are distributed on a first come first serve basis.

CSULB IEEE Green Energy Conference: Call for Papers
Description:
The IEEE Green Energy and Systems Conference provides the perfect environment to network with fellow researchers and practitioners from relevant fields, and a chance to obtain first-hand information on the latest advances in technologies, prototypes and application exemplars. This year’s conference will be hosted on November 25th, 2013 at Pyramid, CSULB.

We are looking in particular for any student members who would like to submit and present their own green-energy-related research in the form of a 2-5 page paper and a presentation. This conference’s focus is on Efficient Utilization of Energy and Storage Systems. Information about the conference and deadlines can be found here.

IEEE ComSoc Student Competitions
Description:
Show how you can change the world by developing a unique communication solution to a real-world problem using engineering, technology, science, computing, and leadership skills to benefit the community or the world. Explain how you have made a positive impact for humanity, and you can win. For more information about the competition, please refer to this link. 1st place will receive $2000 and a plaque, 2nd place gets $1000 and a plaque. Meritorious projects will receive honorary certificates from IEEE Communications Society.
Eligibility: Student member or Graduate Student Member of IEEE Communications Society or team with either Student members or non-members but led by Student Member. All participants must be 18 years or older. IEEE Communications Society membership registration can be found here.
Deadline:
Submit your project by August 30th, 2013

Lab Technician/Research Assistant Opening
Bouchard Laser lab specializes in AFM/ODMR, spectroscopy, cryogens, optics, microscopes, and lasers. The lab will train in everything optics, machine shop, CAD use, and other skill sets. This is an unpaid positions but hard work will be rewarded with authorship credit on papers.
Must be reliable and around the UCLA area for the next year. Must have physical science background. Knowledge of CAD and labwork experience a plus. Summer availability preferable. Application will be accepted through 8th week.

Engineering Ambassadors Program Recruitment
Description:
Engineering Ambassador Program is tasked with the reasonability of showcasing the quality of UCLA Engineering undergraduate education and the achievements of UCLA Engineering faculty through interactions with prospective students, alumni, and guests of HSSEAS. Ambassador duties will include giving private tours of ‘South Campus’ and research laboratories, addressing the concerns of prospective students in their application and decision process.

The recruitment process includes an application and a second round interview for the most qualified applicants. Please submit your completed application to

TBP Freshman Engineer Scholarship
Description:
UCLA TBP is offering its first ever $500 scholarship. To be eligible for the scholarship, you must be a first year student with an Engineering discipline major. More information about the scholarship can be found here along with detailed information regarding the application process.
The deadline to apply is 11:59 pm on Friday, May 24, 2013. Please either email all materials (in one email) to taubetapi@seas.ucla.edu, or turn in a hard copy to the Tau Beta Pi office, located at Boelter 6266K. If no officer is present, please leave it in the box on the door. If selected for an interview, you will be notified by email by Sunday, May 26, 2013. Interviews will be conducted the following Tues. – Thurs. of Week 9.

L-3 Communications Electron Technologies, Inc. Opp.
Description:
L-C Communications Electron Technologies, part of the L-3 Communications family, focuses on providing traveling wave tubes (TWT’s), electron power conditioners (EPC’s) and fully integrated TWTA (TWT amplifier) to both government and commercial customers. In addition, L-3 Communications has expanded its products to Xenon Ion Electric Thrusters and power processing units.
L-3 Communications currently has 6 internship opportunities available in CS, Industrial Engineering, EE and Computer Engineering. Preferred candidate will have basic knowledge in microwave engineering, LabView and C++. In addition, ideal candidates should have knowledge of Visual Basic for MS Office, Android Development and Auto Bug reporting tools such as Bugzilla is a plus.

85th UCLA Extension Technical Management Program

Description:
If you are interested in working in technical management consider the 85th UCLA Extension Technical Management Program.  You will meet technical managers from across the US and abroad from industries that include aerospace, energy, communications, electronics, biomedical, national laboratories, and government.
Here are just a few of the 21 intensive courses to be offered in the upcoming program: 
·           Networking, Influence, and Strategic Relationships
·           Navigating Organizational Politics
·           Creating and Sustaining Excellence in the Workplace
·           Strategic Thinking and Planning for Leaders
·           Building High-Performance Teams
If selected, you will attend three courses during the week, in addition to assisting staff and instructors with a variety of support tasks.  You will receive $250, five free lunches and breakfasts, and attend two evening receptions.
