Winter General Meeting #1: Resume Peer Review

Description:
Kicking off the new quarter, UCLA IEEE will be hosting a resume peer review workshop to help you organize and improve your resume. A Career Center representative will be giving a presentation about resume writing at the meeting and will be available for resume reviews for participants. In addition, UCLA IEEE officers will also be available to answer questions regarding resumes. So remember to bring your resume.

Description:
Southern California Edison (SoCal Edison or SCE) is the primary electricity utility in Southern California, providing electricity to more than 14 million people. Furthermore, SCE has long been committed to utilizing renewable power, with 21.1% of its power portfolio from renewable sources. For electrical engineer interested in the power sector, SCE offers wide range of opportunities and internship programs for both undergraduates and graduates. Bring your resume.

EE Mentorship Event: To Do for Freshmen

Description:
Kicking off the start of the year, EE Mentorship program hosting an event to help mentees plan for the coming quarters. During the first part of the meeting, the mentors will be going over a checklist of things a mentee should complete by the end of his/her freshmen/1st year.   Topics range from academic to housing plans. In the second half of the event is a food social, where mentors and mentees will get a chance to socialize over free food (Chipotle for all!).

Engineering and Technical Information Showcases

Description:
Engineering & Technical Information Showcases is a two-day-long series where each evening a select group of leading employers will be delivering short information sessions on their organizations, followed by individual breakout sessions where students and employer representatives will connect privately.   The showcase will happen on Wednesday, January 23rd (CS & Technology focus:  companies will include Bloomberg and Laserfiche) and Thursday, January 24th (CS and Engineering focus: companies will include Baker Hughes and Semantec).

IEEE Essentials: Lighting Up UCLA

Description:
This is the event postponed from Fall Quarter due to kits shortage.

Come to the first IEEE Essentials of this year and make your very own UCLA-PCB board, complete with blue LEDs and a yellow background. The PCB board is composed of a string of blue LEDs that spell out UCLA as your turn a knob, lighting up the LEDs one at a time.  A video demonstration can be found here (the top vide post).

Due to the limited amount of kits, please come early as kits are distributed on a first come first serve basis.

Student Professional Awareness Venture (S-PAVe)

Description:
The Student Professional Awareness Venture (S-PAVe) is a professional development conference for students, where they will go through a series of workshops and speakers hosted by company representatives. The emphasis of the workshops and speakers will focus on non-technical side of being an engineer, such as interview skills and what employers are looking for in a candidate. Company participants include Boeing, Little Black Bag, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, and Walt Disney. There will be free food and raffles!

Description:

The company is based in Santa Monica

Currently, Science Inc. is looking for full stack and front end developers. Interns will create, develop and maintain Science’s web applications. In addition, interns will work with product managers and stakeholders to create new functionality, turning concept into practical applications. Interns should be passionate about unobtrusive JavaScript and standards complaint HTML and CSS. Preferred experiences are as follow:

  • Hands on front end development experience using HTML, PHP, CSS, Javascript
  • Strong development skills, including object oriented JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3, JSON
  • Familiarity with jQuery
  • Experience developing Chrome Extensions, Firefox Addons, and/or IE Toolbars a plus
  • Strong user experience and visual design skills
  • A working knowledge of industry standard visual design tools (Photoshop, Illustrator), personal information management software, and usability testing and user research.
  • Experience with AJAX techniques and technologies, and a polished style, in regards to web application look-and-feel
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of any modern development language (PHP, Ruby, Python, Java)
  • Experience with Mobile Development: iOS, Android.

Anheuser-Busch Inc. : Electrical Process Engineer
Description:
Anheuser-Busch Inc. is the leading American brewer, holding 48.5 percent share of U.S. beer sales, brewing Budweiser and Bud Light. The company is also a major manufacturer and one of the world’s largest recycler of aluminum cans. Anheuser-Busch is currently looking for an electrical engineer (details can be found here, search for RJ-2012-1466):
  • Bachelor’s degree in EE completed by Dec. 2012
  • Minimum GPA (cumulative): 2.8
  • Able and willing to work a rotation 12-hour schedule

Hiring Electronics Tutor

Currently, a family living in Santa Monica is looking for an engineering tutor for elementary student interested in electronics, mechanics, chemicals. The following is the full message:

“I am looking for someone who can teach basic engineering to a very curious 7 year old. This person would have to be able to explain things in a simple manner and to be willing to let her solder, connect wires, and do a lot of the creating, as she learns best through doing.
We live in Santa Monica, but we are willing to travel. 25 per hour and as homeschoolers our schedule is very flexible.”
