Engineering Talks: Supply Chain Management*

Description:
The seminar’s speakers. Mr. Jack and Mrs. Maureen Chen both came from technical background and proceeded to start and build their own companies. Mr. Jack Chen is an electrical engineering for seven years before changing track to open his own supply management company. Mrs. Maureen Chen is a computer science major who runs her own software company.
The seminar is a combined-topics seminar that will cover engineering, management, international business, trade, and supply chains. Through this seminar, one can begin to see how engineers can become successful as entrepreneurs within the world of business.
If you are interested in the works of the speakers, please refer to these two websites (JMC, a supply management software company here and PEC Global, a supply management consultant here) for more information. Free food will be provided at the event.

2.IEEE Computer Society/Moverio Contest
Description:IEEE CS Society is hosting a competition via video reply and is asking participants to pitch them the “next generation” application ideas for Moverio BT-100, an Android based high resolution see-through display with Wi-Fi connectivity. More information on Moverio BT-100 can be found here. The contest entry date starts on January 1st 2013 and ends on April 30th, 2013. Official rules of the contest can be found here. One grand prize of $8,000 and 3 honorable Mention Prizes of $2,000/each will be given. All winners will also be given a Moverio BT-100 unit.

JPL Mars Rover Talk and LA & OC IEEE Society Expo

Description:
Curiosity is latest and largest Mars Rover (a “Mini-Cooper” on six wheels) carrying advanced science equipment (including a Mars Rock Laser Pulverizer) and has been exploring a young Martian crater.
This Expo is dedicated to the engineering, scientific results and data to-date of the Martian rover. Demonstration includes models such as curiosity landing site scale model, hardware and mock-ups. The feature speaker is the lead NASA-JPL Curiosity Mission Engineer, Mr. Charles Baker. At the expo, several Los Angeles and Orange County professional societies will be present, such as: Planetary Society, IEEE, AIAA, SWE, FSEA, IET, OCVitalLink, INCOSE.
This event is free of charge (no parking and admission fees) and free bottled water and healthy snacks will be provided. Please RSVP as soon as possible. This event is sponsored by IEEE-OC Aerospace & Electronics Systems Society (AESS) and IEEE-OC Computer Society (OCCS). This event is also an LA-OC STEM Outreach Event, so high school and college students are most welcome.

Are you interested in starting your own business? Do you have an idea you want to pursue and implement? Then knowing the basics of intellectual property is a must to protect your work and your effort. Attend the coming Professor Talk, by Professor John Villasenor, on intellectual property and learn how you can utilize this tool to protect your own creation. Free food will be provided as well.

John Villasenor is a professor of electrical engineering at UCLA and a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington DC. His work focuses on the nature and growing impact of digital information.

Project Hello World: Java and Game Programming

Description:
This week we'll learn more advanced concepts in game programming. More specifically, we'll be going over collision detection and particle effects. We'll also talk a bit about animation. If you haven't gone to either of the preceding meetings, it's recommended that you know Java and have some experience with game programming.

Description:
The seminar will be about combining engineering and management, international business and trade, and supply chains. We expect to gain a unique perspective into these topics since Mr. Jack Chen and Mrs. Maureen Chen started with electrical engineering and computer science, very technical backgrounds. We hope to see how engineers can become successful as entrepreneurs within the world of business. You can look towards the meeting notes you took for more information. Also, these two websites (JMC, a supply management software company here and PEC Global, a supply management consultant here) have more information about Mr. Jack Chen, Mrs. Maureen Chen, and their work; they will both be giving the seminar.

Microsoft Research’s 1st Annual International Ladies-Only Hackathon

Description:
The 1st Annual Microsoft Research’s International Ladies-Only hackathon, hosted by USC’s Women In Computer (WIC), welcomes all students of age 16+ from Southern California. No coding experience is required.

The event is planned to be simultaneously broadcasted through Skype on campuses around the world, giving you a chance to meet women not only on our campus but across the world. A surprise celebrity will deliver the keynote presentation. The teams will be form on Friday evening

To compete internationally, the app must be built using Microsoft tools and technologies. The app must be developed using at least one product in the Visual Studio family and must be built for one or more of the following platforms: Windows, Windows Phone, Windows Server and/or ASP.NET, Kinect SDK, Xbox Indie Games, Microsoft .NET Framework and Windows Azure. However, feel free to create an app/website for any platform with any technology you want, but the product will not be eligible to compete internationally.

The Aerospace Corporation: Summer Intern and Part-time
Description:
The Aerospace Corporation is also looking for potential undergrad and grad summer internships and part-time employment at Aerospace while attending UCLA.  You must be a US citizen. 

Required qualifications are listed below:
  • A B.S. degree in EE or related field
  •  Minimum of a MS degree and/or two years of experience since BS degree in the prototyping of digital communication systems and/or algorithms is required for MTS.
  • Prior hand’s on laboratory experience is essential.
  •  Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary.
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Preferred qualifications are listed below:
  • Graduate degree related to design of communication and/or GPS signal processing hardware is preferred.
  • Proficiency in Xilinx Foundation, Matlab, Python and/or Modelsim is preferred.
  • Prior design experience in of VHDL and C/C++ is preferred.
  • Analog or RF design experience is a plus.
  • Experience implementing communication algorithms using embedded software, multi-threaded programming, DSP,FPGA, ADCs, DACs and/or ASICs is desired.
  • A theoretical understanding and practical experience with modern communication and digital signal processing techniques is highly desirable.
