Abridged Version of "IEEE - The Institute" Member Email
=================
Here's your report on news around IEEE, from the editors of The Institute. The current version of The Institute can always be found at http://www.ieee.org/theinstitute
1. Beware: HR Is Screening You on Facebook
Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter aren't just popular ways for friends and colleagues to stay in touch--they're also becoming favorite tools of employers for screening job candidates. And that can lead to undesirable consequences. To learn how you could be affected, read on at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org/u/15758/1232025
2. Marketplace of Ideas: Not for Your Eyes Only
A recent Harris Interactive survey found that 45 percent of human resources professionals admitted to using social networking Web sites such as LinkedIn and Facebook to vet job candidates, and 11 percent more plan to do so soon. Also, 35 percent reported they declined to hire someone after checking out an applicant's site and finding such things as provocative photos, indications of alcohol or drug use, and comments bad-mouthing former employers.
Are you concerned that your online information could hinder your chances for a job? Is it fair that employers are using social networking sites to screen job candidates? Weigh in at mailto:institute@ieee.org
While you're on the site, read responses to October's question on whether playing online shooter games with coworkers is a good team-building exercise. Some find these video games great stress relievers; others say companies should find less violent methods of team building.
Read members' responses at http://bmsmail3.ieee.org/u/15759/1232025
3. Electrical Engineering Verification with Mathcad
Electrical Engineers are using Mathcad to standardize their engineering calculations. Mathcad's easy-to-use "whiteboard" interface, with natural math notation and unit support, enables electrical engineers to perform, document & share calculations with ease. This presentation shows engineering professionals how Mathcad and Intercomm may be combined to assist in the verification of Electrical Engineering Designs.

4. Lessons for Would-be Entrepreneurs
On 21 January from 2 to 3 p.m. ET the IEEE-USA-sponsored webinar "Lessons From Bootstraps to Billions" will teach entrepreneurs how to achieve goals with less investment, explain the financial implications of business decisions, and offer capital-efficient financing strategies. For more information and to register, visit http://bmsmail3.ieee.org/u/15768/1232025
5. Learn About the Smart Grid and How Intel Designs for the Environment
If you're interested in green technology, check out the IEEE Emerging Technology Forum webinar "Enabling Electronics for Smart Grid Technologies and Beyond." Also on the site, learn how Intel and other technology companies are working toward sustainable manufacturing and designing for the environment. For more information and to view the webinar now on demand, visit http://bmsmail3.ieee.org/u/15769/1232025
