UCLA IEEE 2012-2013 Recap

Another successful year has ended for UCLA IEEE! UCLA IEEE would like to thank their sponsors, which included the UCLA Electrical Engineering Department, for believing in and funding what UCLA IEEE represents. Not only that, but UCLA IEEE would like to recognize important figures, Dr. Ethan Wang, Dr. Mike Briggs, and Dr. Bill Goodin, for their guidance and support. Lastly, thanks to all the members who participate in events and projects; without them, there would be no UCLA IEEE.

With support from those listed and more, UCLA IEEE has been able to accomplish so much to be recognized within UCLA as well as around the world. Please read the compilation below for all of UCLA IEEE’s accomplishments:

General
  • UCLA IEEE hosted a successful Student Professional Ventures (S-PAVe) conference for over 70 participants with company representatives from Little Black Bag, Walt Disney Imagineering, Raytheon, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin.
  • UCLA IEEE hosted its 4th Annual Ethics Competition and won 1st place for the second consecutive time. UCI and UCSD also competed.
  • UCLA IEEE hosted a total of 125 events (not including weekly officer meetings and project meetings) throughout the year. Events included were company infosessions, tech talks, professional development workshops, general meetings, Professor lectures, soldering workshops, tutorials, socials, K-12 outreach, and more.

NatCar
  • At the ViaCar Competition in UCSD, UCLA teams Leslie, DHiZeL, and UpDog respectively placed 1st, 2nd, and 4th. There were 14 teams from UCLA, UCSD, UCSB competing.
  • At the NatCar Competition in UCD, UCLA teams took 5 of the first 8 places. There were 25 teams from UCLA, UCB, UCD, UCSD, CSUF competing.
  • UCLA IEEE hosted the first UCLA NatCar Competition on 5/25. Team Dantastic from UCLA took 1st place with a tremendous run of 9.9 ft/sec. CSUF also competed.
MicroMouse
  • At the California MicroMouse competition in UCSD, UCLA team Green Giant took 1st place with an 8 second run. UCLA, UCSD, UCR, KSU, UNLV were competing.
  • UCLA IEEE hosted the first All-America Micromouse Competition on 5/26. Team Green Giant V2.2 from UCLA took 1st place with a tremendous run of 6.55 seconds. A total of 10 teams from UCLA, UCSD, CSULA, and UCR competed.
Open Project Space (OPS)
  • With new lab space, OPS was able to expand from 50 students to 100 students this year.
IEEE Essentials
  •  “Lighting Up UCLA display” and the “LED Tilt sensor” were two completely free and open to public mini projects for this program this year (first come first serve basis).
  • EAGLE tutorials were also provided to members.
MakerBot Replicator Dual Extruder 3D Printer
·         With student contributions and funding support from Professor Briggs and the UCLA High Frequency Electronics Lab, UCLA IEEE was able to purchase a 3D printer for project usage.
·         UCLA IEEE’s 3D printing services are also available for non-IEEE project usage for a small fee.

UCLA University Nanosat Program Recruitment
Organization:
UCLA Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics
Requirements:
20 hours/week for 10 weeks, US citizen, current undergraduate engineering student, and good standing with the University
Preference:
Special emphasis on recruiting EE students
Description:
University Nanosat Program, first launched in 1999, is a satellite design and fabrication competition for universities. With the goal of designing, building and testing small satellite, the University Nanosat Program aims to train next generation of satellite professionals.

The program is currently searching for 2 students to work in a lab environment to facilitate and build ground magnetometers. Goals for this summer are to:
-  Repair San Gabriel Dam magnetometer
-  Ground magnetometer calibrations
-  Inventory and replenish ground mag stock
-  Build 3 ground magnetometers

This Week:
Last Friday, UCLA IEEE was awarded the 2013-2013 UCLA Engineering Student Group of the Year award presented by ESUC, for the third consecutive time. From participating in the many events this year to taking projects to competitions, thank you for making it possible to receive this honor by pouring your time and passion into IEEE.

There will be no more UCLA IEEE-wide events for the quarter, so students, please use the time to study hard for your finals!

MentorSEAS: Become a Mentor Next Year!
Description:
Do you want to become a mentor next year? The HSSEAS school-wide mentorship program is looking for continuing students, to help launch new students into a successful college career. The program emphasizes building a strong mentor-mentee relationship to guide and encourage both parties through study advice, career tips, and more.

There is currently a need for mentors studying Electrical Engineering, so please consider this opportunity to learn and lead!
Preference:
1) Cumulative GPA over 3.0
2) Be a 1st, 2nd, or 3rd year student currently and attend the entire 2013-2014 academic year
3) Attend Engineering Welcome Day (zero week) for a 30-minute one-time training seminar and meet your mentees! Free mentorship t-shirts and dinner will be provided.

The above recommendations are highly flexible and exceptions will gladly be made if you fill out this form.

UCLA University Nanosat Program Recruitment
Organization:
UCLA Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics
Requirements:
 10+ Hours/Week, Current Engineering Student, and good standing with the University
Preference:
Ideally willing to stay on the team for long term; special emphasis on recruiting RF students.
Description:
University Nanosat Program, first launched in 1999, is a satellite design and fabrication competition for universities. With the goal of designing, building and testing small satellite, the University Nanosat Program aims to train next generation of satellite professionals. For more information, please see US Air Force’s page here.

UCLA’s Nanosat Program is focused on Electron Losses and Fields Investigation (ELFIN), a space weather investigation in a 3U Cubesat, is current recruiting several EE and CS students to join the project. The main responsibilities include soldering, coding in Arduino & PIG’s, and RF related tasks (a special emphasis on recruiting RF students). If further funding is approved, students may be monetarily compensated.

85th UCLA Extension Technical Management Program
Date:
September 15th – September 20th, 2013
Location:
Covel Commons (Sunset Village)
Description:
If you are interested in working in technical management consider the 85th UCLA Extension Technical Management Program.  You will meet technical managers from across the US and abroad from industries that include aerospace, energy, communications, electronics, biomedical, national laboratories, and government.
Here are just a few of the 21 intensive courses to be offered in the upcoming program: 
·           Networking, Influence, and Strategic Relationships
·           Navigating Organizational Politics
·           Creating and Sustaining Excellence in the Workplace
·           Strategic Thinking and Planning for Leaders
·           Building High-Performance Teams
If selected, you will attend three courses during the week, in addition to assisting staff and instructors with a variety of support tasks.  You will receive $250, five free lunches and breakfasts, and attend two evening receptions.

IEEE ComSoc Student Competitions
Description:
Show how you can change the world by developing a unique communication solution to a real-world problem using engineering, technology, science, computing, and leadership skills to benefit the community or the world. Explain how you have made a positive impact for humanity, and you can win. For more information about the competition, please refer to this link. 1st place will receive $2000 and a plaque, 2nd place gets $1000 and a plaque. Meritorious projects will receive honorary certificates from IEEE Communications Society.
Eligibility: Student member or Graduate Student Member of IEEE Communications Society or team with either Student members or non-members but led by Student Member. All participants must be 18 years or older. IEEE Communications Society membership registration can be found here.
