        Location:
        Boelter 4760
        Time:
        6PM
        Description:
UCLA IEEE is beginning a seminar program in technology just for students to learn more about UCLA professors' research. The first lecture is called Mathematical Theory of Technology presented by Dr. Burgin

Dr. Mark Burgin received his M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics from Moscow State University and Doctor of Science in logic and philosophy from the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. He was a Professor at Institute of Education, Kiev; at International Solomon University, Kiev; at Kiev State University, Ukraine; and the Head of the Assessment Laboratory, Research Center of Science at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. Currently he is a citizen of the USA working at UCLA.  Dr. Burgin is a member of New York Academy of Sciences and a Senior Member of IEEE. He is the Chief Editor of the journal Integration, Chief Editor of the journal Information and an Associate Editor of the International Journal on Computers and their Applications. Dr. Burgin is doing research, has publications, and taught courses in mathematics, computer science, information sciences, artificial intelligence, and logic. Dr. Burgin has authorized and co-authorized more than 500 papers and 17 books, including such recently published books as “Theory of Named Sets” (2011), “Theory of Information” (2010), “Measuring Power of Algorithms, Computer Programs, and Information Automata” (2010), “Neoclassical Analysis: Calculus Closer to the Real World” (2008), “Super-recursive Algorithms” (2005). He originated such theories as the mathematical theory of technology, system theory of time, general information theory, theory of named sets, and neoclassical analysis (in mathematics), making essential contributions to such fields as foundations of mathematics, theory of knowledge, theory of intellectual activity, theory of algorithms, and complexity studies.

The first lecture is called Mathematical Theory of Technology.
The primary goal of an engineer is the design, manufacture, and operation of structures and mechanisms. All these processes are based on definite technologies. It means that technologies are both the main tool and the principal goal of engineers.
Technologies, in primitive forms, existed from the beginning of human civilization. For millennia, technologies were comparatively simply and did not demand a special theory. In the twentieth century, complexity of technologies started growing with a high rate and necessity in a theory of technology is becoming more and more urgent.
Development of technological knowledge made possible to elaborate the mathematical theory of technology, applying mathematics not only to separate stages and operations but to technology as a whole. The starting point of this theory is an exact, however, informal definition of technology as a system of knowledge. Based on this definition, two classes of technologies (the general and concrete technologies) are introduced to reflect the situation existing in industry and engineering. This provides for the construction of a general mathematical model of a concrete technology as well as for the development of a relevant mathematical apparatus and exact methods for an investigation and design of various technologies (in industry, management, information processing, education and so on).
A concrete technology is a description of system functioning. There are three levels of such descriptions: algorithms, programs, and technologies. An algorithm gives purely structural description of a process. The mathematical theory of technology utilizes new mathematical disciplines such as theory of named sets, fuzzy set theory, and theory of structured multidimensional models of systems and processes as well as traditional fields such as algebra, theory of probabilities, and theory of algorithms.
In the mathematical theory of technology, such problems as reliability, equivalence, stability, constructibility, and realizability of technologies are studied. One of the goals is the development of efficient methods and algorithms of the computer aided design of technologies.
In the lecture, elements of the mathematical theory of technology will be exposed and some applications considered.
