Engineers as Teachers Outreach Program
Date:
For Winter Quarter
Description:
Iridescent, a non-profit LA-based science education organization is looking for science and engineering student volunteers (undergrad and grad) to pilot an "Engineers as Teachers" program in Winter quarter 2011.  Come showcase your technical knowledge by teaching simple science topics to children and families!

Participants will meet the weekend following 2nd week (January 15) for an information session and crash course in teaching family science programs and, during the month of February, will teach a 4-week (one evening per week) science class to elementary school students and their families.  A second session for March is currently being developed and will encompass more school sites. 

Lesson plans for various topics have already been developed, but you may need to tweak the lessons to make them better before presenting them at the classes.

S-PAVe (Student Professional Awareness Venture)

Description:
 S-PAVe is an IEEE event that will be hosted at UCLA on Saturday, January 22nd, 2011.  The topic of our S-PAVe will be focused mainly on Career Growth, and the advancement of careers in the workplace.  This can range from recognizing the importance of grad school and certifications, or other topics such as switching from technical positions to management.

Our agenda for S-PAVe will last roughly half a day, from 10AM until 3:30PM.  We will have experienced, noteworthy speakers, workshops related to Career Growth, and technical demos from companies on display.  Food will be provided, and networking possibilities with companies will be available.  Look forward to additional details!

BME Bio-Tech Competition

Abstract of 50 to 500 words submitted for judging before January 24, 2011.
Description:
      If you want to challenge yourself by writing a theme paper, check out the IEEE BME Biotech Student Competition at USC.

     The student shall present a brief overview of the basic concept, either a totally new idea or a conceptual modification to an existing item or system, by using  Biomedical, and/or Biochemical, Electrical, Electronic, or related techniques to assist a persons’ disability or to improve a persons’ ability to manage tasks that usually require assistance. 

    If interested, please email to Dr. Chris Druzgalski at druz@ieee.org. Include the following information: Name and address of the participant, tentative area or anticipated title of the entry.
Awards: $1,000 (First Place), $500 (Second) and $200 (Third and Fourth Place)
